HISTORY OF LODGE WAVERLEY 597

Foundation

The lodge was chartered by the Grand Lodge of Scotland on the Monday 5th of February 1877 as the North British Railway Lodge, there had been earlier attemps to form a lodge for railwaymen but these had failed. The memberhip was not restricted to railwaymen but they held a dominent poition for many years.

The consecration took place on Friday 2nd of March 1877 at the Ship Hotel and was conducted by Alexander Hay Grand Jeweller, William Officer Past Grand Deacon and David Kinnear who was just about to be appointed Grand Cashier.

The first office bearers of the Lodge were installed by the deputation from the Grand Lodge and the company then sat down to a short supper.
